Quinta das Lágrimas

This 18th century estate is located 15 minutes walk from Coimbra centre. The legend around the "Estate of Tears" is the tragic, forbidden love affair between D. Pedro, who was the heir to the throne and D. Inês de Castro i det 14th century. The legend says it was here Inês shed her last tears (lágrimas).

The estate has belonged to the same family since 1730. With its 12 hectares of woods and botanical gardens, the Quinta das Lágrimas is the city hotel with largest natural area in the entire Iberian Peninsula.

The palace is restored to its original glory where each room has its own personality. In early spring 2004 an exotic spa and fifteen new designer rooms was opened.

The palace rooms, which ones accommodated the Duke of Wellington, and King Carlos of Portugal, have the charm and romanticism of days gone, and offer a stay in history.

The garden rooms offer direct access to the botanical garden, and overlook the stage for the love affair of Pedro and Inês.

The Spa rooms are modern in design, and have individual Jacuzzi.

The rooms and verandas of the hotel are at once magnificent and cozy, offering perfect retreats to read or enjoy a quiet conversation. Completely covered with panels of exotic woods, the library has thousands of old books that narrate the history of Portugal and of the family.

Restaurant ”Arcadas da Capela” has one Michelin star. The restaurant ”Aqua” offers casual dining and latin food.

The ”Questão Coimbrã” bar transports guests to a time when Quinta das Lágrimas was one of the leading centers of cultural and political debate in Portugal.
